Never Again! Working to End the Uyghur Genocide

NEVER AGAIN! WORKING TOGETHER TO END THE UYGHUR GENOCIDE
Webinar Panel with Uyghur Activists and Survivors and Jewish Leaders

The current Uygur genocide is the largest - in scale and brutality - since the Holocaust. What is being done about it? What can we do? Over the summer, Rabbi Zoe found her daughter crying and saying, "What can we do to help the Uyghurs?" She was embarrassed about how little she knows. Since then, she's been talking with the Uyghur American Association about her very question.

We will hear victim testimony, talk with survivors of the torture in the camps and people whose families have been retaliated against, along with Kuzzat Altay, President of the Uyghur American Association, leading Uyghur activists, and leaders from the Jewish community for an engaging webinar to learn more about the Uyghur genocide and the Jewish community’s role in ending it. All are welcome to attend, irrespective of background, nationality, faith, or ethnicity.

A message from Max Gelber, Program Director of the Uyghur American Association:

For decades, the Chinese government has waged an all-out war against the Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples in East Turkistan—the Uyghur homeland in Xinjiang, China—because of their ethnic identity, cultural heritage, and religious beliefs. Decades of repressive policies came to a head when the Chinese government began building modern-day concentration camps. Since 2017, the Chinese authorities have locked 1.8 million or more innocent Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples in these camps, where they live in inhumane conditions, and are subjected to ideological indoctrination, forced labor, rape, torture, and worse.

Never Again?

Outside of the camps, East Turkistan remains the largest open-air prison on Planet Earth. Uyghur men, women, and children are tracked through a high-tech surveillance network, unparalleled in sophistication. Even the most benign activities—growing a beard, reading the Quran, talking with relatives abroad, and applying for a passport—are offenses punishable by imprisonment. Throughout East Turkistan, the Chinese government has embarked on a mass sterilization campaign to ensure the eradication of the Uyghur people. According to a recent Jamestown Foundation report, 80% of all IUD placements in China were carried out in East Turkistan, though the population of East Turkistan is merely 1.8% of China’s national population.

Never Again?

Never Again is happening at this very moment, in front of our very own eyes. The Uyghur genocide is the largest—in scale and brutality—since the Holocaust.

The Jewish people have endured unprecedented suffering: bondage in Egypt, pogroms in Eastern Europe, Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and Anti-Semitism to this day. Throughout history, the Jewish people have not only survived, but thrived in the face of unparalleled persecution. The Jewish people understand suffering and have therefore been stalwart defenders of human rights and social justice around the globe. We are asking for the Jewish community’s support in stopping the Uyghur genocide.

Please join the Uyghur American Association President Kuzzat Altay, Temple Isaiah Rabbi Zoë Klein Miles, and other leaders from the Jewish community for an engaging webinar to learn more about the Uyghur genocide and the Jewish community’s role in ending it. All are welcome to attend, irrespective of background, nationality, faith, or ethnicity.
