Discussion Without Dessert - Almost a Year Coping With COVID-19

ALMOST A YEAR COPING WITH COVID-19 - Our Speaker Dr. Sharon Balter, Director of Acute Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

GET THE LATEST PANDEMIC NEWS

Our "Discussion Without Dessert" speaker will be Dr. Sharon Balter. Dr. Balter works closely with Dr. Barbara Ferrer and is in the forefront of LA County's work with all aspects of the pandemic. She came to Los Angeles from her previous position as the Director of  the Enteric, Waterborne and Health Education Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

This is an opportunity to listen, learn and ask questions of a knowledgeable medical professional about COVID-19.  You are welcome to register friends to join you for a very special and informative evening.

More About Dr. Balter:
Dr. Balter obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from New York University's School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. She then served in the Epidemic Intelligence Service in the Respiratory Disease Branch at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia and worked for two years at the National Immunization Program.

From 2001-2016, she oversaw the Enteric, Waterborne and Health Education Unit in the Bureau of Communicable Disease at the NYC Department of Heath and Mental Hygiene. During her sixteen years there, she led a team that investigated over 300 food borne outbreaks, established "Team Sal," a student team to assist in food borne outbreaks, and did work to use social media to detect outbreaks.  She and her team also developed chronic Hepatitis B and C registries and used them to make estimates of burden of disease for NYC. She worked closely with Environmental Health, establishing one of the first cooling power registries in the United States for use in investigating Legionella outbreaks.  She responded to numerous public health emergencies including establishing syndromic surveillance following the 9/11 terror attacks, setting up shelter surveillance following hurricanes and investigating infectious disease emergencies such as anthrax, the influenzas, pandemic and others.

She came to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health as the Director of the Acute Communicable Disease Program in July of 2017. It is a privilege and honor to have her with us tonight to learn about her work with COVID-19. On a daily basis she deals with all the issues and challenges of the virus.

Since we will be together virtually, Dorothy is sharing one of her favorite recipes from her cooking classes and invites you to make it prior to the evening and enjoy it during Discussion Without Dessert.
